What is Vein Disease?

Learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency (vein disease), a condition more common than you might think. At Vein and Vascular in Las Cruces, we offer advanced treatments that not only improve your health but also help you look and feel your best. Our specialists are here to guide you every step of the way.

What is venous disease?

Your leg veins are built with connective tissue, muscle, and elastic fibers that help them expand and contract as blood flows through. Tiny valves inside your veins keep blood moving in the right direction, upward to your heart against gravity. When these valves weaken due to chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), blood can pool in the legs.

This pooling increases pressure, leading to symptoms such as aching or heavy legs, swelling, itching, varicose veins, skin discoloration, thickened or leathery skin, and even painful ulcers.

Vein disease is very common, affecting 30–40 million people in the U.S. According to the AHA journal Circulation, about 23% of adults have varicose veins, including 22 million women and 11 million men between the ages of 40 and 80. At Vein and Vascular in Las Cruces, we specialize in diagnosing and treating these conditions with safe, minimally invasive procedures.

Spider veins

Spider veins are small, dilated blood vessels that often look like spider webs or thin tree branches. They can appear red, blue, or purple and are most commonly seen on the legs, chest, or face. Like varicose veins, spider veins are a sign of underlying venous reflux.

Although they are usually considered cosmetic, spider veins may also cause uncomfortable symptoms such as itching, burning, or cramping.

Spider veins develop for many of the same reasons as varicose veins, including genetics, aging, pregnancy, hormonal changes, long periods of sitting or standing, weight gain, and sun exposure without proper protection. At Vein and Vascular in Las Cruces, we offer safe, effective treatments to restore clear, healthy-looking skin.

Varicose veins

Varicose veins are swollen, enlarged veins that often appear in the calves and groin. When blood pools inside the vein, it stretches and twists, creating a rope-like or knotted appearance. This increased pressure can cause aching, throbbing, or heavy legs.

Several factors contribute to varicose veins, including genetics, age, weight, gender (more common in women), and lifestyle. Jobs that require long hours of standing or sitting such as teaching, nursing, hairstyling, factory work, or service industry roles increase the risk.

Unlike spider veins, varicose veins are more than a cosmetic issue. If left untreated, they can lead to serious complications such as ulcers that don’t heal, bleeding, or even deep vein thrombosis (DVT). At Vein and Vascular in Las Cruces, our specialists offer safe, minimally invasive treatments to relieve discomfort and protect long-term health.

Symptoms of vein disease

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are enlarged, swollen veins that often appear in the calves or groin. When blood pools inside, the veins stretch and twist, creating a rope-like or knotted look. This increased pressure can cause aching, heaviness, or throbbing pain — especially after long periods of sitting or standing.

Spider Veins

Thin and web-like in appearance, spider veins are tiny veins near the skin’s surface that may be red or blue. Beyond their look, they can also cause irritation, swelling, itching, or even restless, achy legs. Our Las Cruces specialists provide safe, minimally invasive solutions to relieve discomfort and improve confidence.

What happens if I don’t treat my vein disease?

What starts as mild swelling, itching, or varicose veins can quickly turn into painful, more serious complications if left untreated. Vein disease may lead to aching legs, ulcers, skin damage, or dangerous blood clots (DVT). Early treatment from a board-certified vein doctor can protect your health and restore your quality of life.
